Christian Smith

Christian Smith has been at the top of his game as a DJ and producer for over a decade, but despite enjoying a global reputation as one of the most evergreen performers in his field, times have never been quite as good as they are right now. Born in Sweden, Christian spent much of his youth and early adult life in Germany and America. This exposure to different cultures gave Christian a broader outlook than most 30-somethings, even for a well-travelled DJ more familiar with Star Alliance lounges than home comforts. This open-minded outlook comes through loud and clear in the music he makes and plays. While his roots lie in techno, Christian has never been a purist; favouring instead to flavour the melodic, rhythmical music he loves with doses of funk or intersperse the raw energy of his sets with inspired moments of pure euphoria.

2009 was Christianʼs busiest year to date. Having relocated to Sao Paulo, Brazil from Spain, Christian has taken advantage of the change of location to launch the next chapter in his career. Off the back of delivering the crossover records of 2008 in the form of Total Departure on Adam Beyerʼs Drumcode label, Christian retreated to the studio to conjure up a batch of fresh sounding club bombs which went on to surface on John Digweedʼs Bedrock label, Dubfireʼs Sci+Tec, the legendary Renaissance, and Steve Lawlerʼs ultra cool Viva imprint. The end result was over 30,000 downloads on Beatport and the successful completion of the transformation of Christian from a member of the old school techno elite to one of the lead players in the current marketplace; pushing his new bigroom, crossover sound and a earning a fresh relevance from a totally new contemporary audience.

Having re-emerged with such impact the challenge was to maintain the impetus and keep the evolution moving forward at pace. The second half of 2009 delivered the answer with the authority of a man on a run of form that surpassed even Christianʼs high expectations. Combining this new-found form with the exciting new opportunities that presented themselves, Christian delivered a seemingly endless supply of chart-topping productions including his Beatport #1 Air Miles collaboration with Reset Robot on 100% Pure, his Indecent Exposure single which was a mainstay of Beatportʼs Techno Top 10 through November and December and a pitch perfect remix of the classic Trancesetterʼs track The Search. Add in to the mix an EP for Steve Angelloʼs Size label, remixing Steve Angello, Sharam and Carl Craig plus compiling Renaissanceʼs inaugural Platform compilation and itʼs clear why Christian starts 2010 as one of the most sought after producers in electronic music.

With the momentum of his recent successes firmly behind him and the strength of fresh inspiration driving his ambition forward, 2010 promises to be another vintage year for the new, super-charged Christian Smith. Having recently made his second appearance on BBC Radio 1ʼs Essential Mix, Spring 2010 will see Christian embark on a world tour to accompany his soon to be released debut solo album “Directorʼs Cut” in March. Featuring a wealth of trademark high-impact productions, the album marks Christianʼs evolution as a producer, now recognised across the scene for his melodic and emotive music that has the necessary quality to effortlessly cross genre boundaries and find favour with fans of house, progressive and techno. An achievement recognised by Christianʼs recent selection to play alongside Tiesto on his Brazilian tour and appear at the dazzling Sensation White party in Chile. Proof, if it was needed, that it is possible for a already successful producer to reinvent their sound and maintain their relevance and position at the very pinnacle of electronic music.
